IMPACT ASSESSMENT

In 2020, after 3 years of activity, BECOMTECH underwent a rigorous and independent impact assessment, carried out by the Phare agency. The evaluation is based on an in-depth qualitative survey including: a literature review, 20 semi-directional interviews with participants with diverse characteristics, 2 observation workshop sessions for Ambassadors. The questionnaires developed by the Phare agency allow the association to monitor the social impact of the programmes each year.

RESULTS

The study reveals the major impacts of the JUMP IN TECH and AMBASSADRICES programs on adolescent girls.

  • 75% of participants want to move towards a digital sector or related to digital
  • 88% of participants feel able to speak in public or in front of a group
  • 98% of participants say that JUMP IN TECH has helped them to have more ambition in their journey

100% DE FILLES

Non-mixing is a major condition for achieving the impacts of JUMP IN TECH and the AMBASSADRICES program. In a context where the remoteness of girls from digital technology results in a weak feeling of skills, it promotes the creation of an environment of trust, characterized by the absence of judgment and mutual assistance between the participants.

ÉMANCIPATION

From JUMP IN TECH, participants gain confidence in the rest of their school and study path. BECOMTECH's programs act on the level of self-confidence of girls and allow them to develop their future ambitions.

5 SOCIAL IMPACTS

DEVELOPPING DIGITAL SKILLS

By making motivation the only prerequisite, JUMP IN TECH is aimed at girls who may be particularly alienated from computers and digital technology. Whatever their initial level, the participants acquire digital skills throughout the programme. They deepen these skills, reuse them and even pass them on as Ambassadors, both within and outside the framework of BECOMTECH.

CHANGING REPRESENTATIONS OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY AND THE PLACE OF WOMEN IN THIS SECTOR

The two BECOMTECH programmes break with preconceived ideas that tend to associate computing and digital technology with programming and a geeky realm from which girls are excluded. They act on the representations that the participants in JUMP IN TECH, and then the Ambassadors, have of digital technology as an occupation and professional sector. They promote awareness of gender inequalities in access to IT and digital careers.

BELONGING TO A COLLECTIVE SOLIDARITY OF AMBASSADORS

The programmes implemented by BECOMTECH give a central place to the collective, the outlines of which take shape from JUMP IN TECH, and which comes to life within the community of Ambassadors. During JUMP IN TECH, the connections between participants form the beginnings of the trainees’ network, They develop a sense of belonging to the association and become involved in mutual aid practices.

PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS

Beyond the effects on digital skills in the strict sense, BECOMTECH’s programmes enable participants to develop public speaking skills, particularly on the place of women in the digital world. During JUMP IN TECH, the girls first develop a sense of ability and legitimacy to speak out and share their opinions and questions. This first step then allows them to take on a public role as BECOMTECH Ambassadors, and thus to represent the association by spreading its messages in various contexts, including institutional ones.

BROADENING OF CAREER PROSPECTS, PARTICULARLY IN THE DIGITAL SECTORS

During JUMP IN TECH, and later as Ambassadors, the teenage girls see their career prospects broaden, especially (but not only) as far as the digital world is concerned. The programmes help to remove some of the obstacles they face in their career path. The participants have access to new concrete opportunities. These facilitate their engagement in the digital sectors. Finally, the girls and women of the community build and/or consolidate a network that can have an influence on their career path.

Ambassadors become actresses of the digital transformation

Elena, 17, Ambassador for two years, junior

“It was an opportunity to discover many professions I was unaware of, which highlighted the vastness of the sector.”

Dounia, 19, Ambassador for one year, senior

“My perception changed because of something very simple. I thought that IT was created by men for men but we discovered that it was actually created by women. And this changed my perspective.”

Aya 19, Ambassador for two years, senior

“Before, I wasn’t too confident about approaching others, [...] I didn't really see the point [...] of going out into the world. But BECOMTECH […] has really shown me that [...] I have things to offer to those around me and that I’m worth it.”
